Cara Mullin - Social Success for blogging mums PDF Print

Press Release - 15 July 2009

Social success pays for blogging mums by Cara Mullin*

Home-based and baby-bound? A former go-getter that’s gone off to have children and wants to make a career comeback on a more flexible basis.

So how can you convince a business to outsource a project or contract to you when you’re at home?

If only you could reach the decision-makers in your industry and show them you still have what it takes; that you’re at the cutting edge, intelligent, in touch and informed.

But how?

You work the network, that’s how. No, not your old girlfriends; what you need are the social networks created by social media on the Internet.

You impress through ‘social success’. To be specific, you blog your way back to work.

It’s easy when you know how…

Social media are characterized by content generated on the Net in a format designed to be shared while enabling comment. There are photo-sharing sites (Flickr), video-sharing opportunities (You Tube), social interaction platforms (Facebook) and micro-blogging vehicles (Twitter).

A lot of web sites offer blogs. Find one that suits you.

Use is usually free and you can create your own pages and generate your own content – which is just the opening you’re looking for.

Begin blogging, start researching and develop web-cred in your niche.

But don’t be a blog hog. You don’t need to conquer every site at once. Start with one or two. Create a page, introduce yourself and start to display your specialist expertise.

Become a good source of information. Twitter is useful here. You feed your Twitter posts through to your blog to keep your blog followers updated on what you find interesting and what you are doing.

Personalize your site, welcome incoming post and update your page regularly. Stay current on developments in your sector and write about topics relating to your industry.

Over time, you show potential employers or business associates that you are not out on limb out in the suburbs you’re out in front of your specialization.

This form of self-promotion is available to lots of women looking for a way back into the world of work … office support providers, virtual PAs, travel consultants, book-keepers, life coaches, photographers, nannies, web designers, marketing, advertising and PR specialists, to name a few.

In no time you develop contacts and create a little community that becomes a reference point and resource for those in your line of work.

Socialize today; commercialize tomorrow. Because business and work opportunities will emerge. They did for me.
